Can I Remove a Bid on eBay?

Made a bid you regret? Here's exactly when eBay lets you take it back - and when you're locked in.

Can you actually retract a bid on eBay?

Yes, but only in specific circumstances. eBay treats bids as binding contracts, so you can't simply change your mind. The platform does allow retractions, but only when there's a legitimate reason.

Typo in your bid - you accidentally entered £500 instead of £50
Seller changed the description after you placed your bid
Changed your mind - not a valid reason for retraction
Found it cheaper elsewhere - eBay won't accept this

If your reason doesn't fall into one of eBay's accepted categories, your bid stands and you're expected to follow through if you win.

Quick answer

Yes, but only in limited situations. eBay allows bid retractions if you made a genuine error, the seller significantly changed the listing, or you can't reach the seller. You cannot retract simply because you changed your mind.

When eBay allows bid retractions

eBay has three accepted reasons for pulling back a bid. Anything outside these will likely be rejected.

Accidental bid amount - you typed the wrong number and can prove it was a genuine mistake
Listing changed significantly - the seller altered the item description after your bid
Can't reach the seller - you've tried to contact them and received no response

How to retract a bid step by step

If you have a valid reason, here's the process.

Bid retraction steps 0 / 5 checked

Go to eBay's bid retraction page (search "retract a bid" on eBay Help)
Enter the item number from the listing you bid on
Select your reason for retracting from the dropdown menu
Click "Retract bid" to submit your request
Check your eBay messages for confirmation of the retraction

Time limits and rules

When you can retract depends on how much time is left on the auction.

More than 12 hours left: you can retract, but it removes all your bids on that item. You can then place a new, correct bid if you wish.
Less than 12 hours left: you can only retract bids placed within the last hour. Any bids placed earlier are locked in.

eBay also tracks retraction history. If you retract bids too often, your account may face restrictions or suspension.

What if you can't retract your bid?

If the retraction window has passed or eBay won't accept your reason, you still have options.

Contact the seller - explain the situation and ask them to cancel your bid on their end
Contact eBay support - if you have a genuine case, customer service may be able to help

If you win an auction and refuse to pay, eBay can open an unpaid item case against you, which affects your account standing. It's always better to try the proper channels first.
