Understanding GSM, Bubble Height, and Layer Thickness in Bubble Mailers

GSM, bubble height, and layer thickness: the specs that define bubble mailer performance.

GSM explained

GSM measures the outer film weight
Higher GSM = stronger, more tear-resistant
Higher GSM = heavier affecting postage

Quick answer

Standard bubble mailers use 50-70gsm outer film with 10mm bubble height. The outer film GSM determines tear resistance. Bubble height determines cushioning depth (10mm standard, 25mm for fragile items). Film thickness determines puncture resistance. For most e-commerce items, standard specifications are adequate. Upgrade to thicker film and taller bubbles only for genuinely fragile products.

Bubble height

Jewellery, phone cases, cosmetics, accessories.

Glass, ceramics, sensitive electronics.

Small bubbles provide more even, consistent coverage for lighter items.

Layer thickness

Standard bubble mailers use single-layer bubble. Premium versions use double-layer for extra protection. The outer film typically ranges from 50-70gsm for kraft and 40-60 microns for poly. Thicker outer film resists tearing from contents and handling.
