How long does a 1st class parcel take?

Royal Mail aims to deliver 1st class parcels by the next working day after posting. This isn't guaranteed, but the vast majority arrive within 1-2 working days.

Aim: next working day - Royal Mail's target for 1st class delivery
Most arrive within 1-2 working days of posting
Not guaranteed - 1st class is a target, not a promise. Only Special Delivery is guaranteed next day.
Working days only - Monday to Saturday. Items posted Friday may arrive Saturday or Monday.

Quick answer

Royal Mail 1st class parcels aim to arrive the next working day. Most are delivered within 1-2 working days of posting. This isn't guaranteed - for guaranteed next-day delivery, use Special Delivery. Working days are Monday to Saturday (excluding bank holidays).

What affects delivery time

Time of posting - items posted before the last collection time have the best chance of next-day delivery
Location - remote areas, Scottish Highlands, and islands may take an extra day
Peak periods - Christmas, Black Friday, and industrial action can cause delays of several days

Tracking options for 1st class

Standard 1st class stamps and small parcels don't include tracking. You won't know exactly when the item arrives unless the recipient tells you.

Add "Signed For" to your 1st class postage for tracking and a signature on delivery. Costs a small amount extra and provides proof of delivery.

Tracked 24 provides full tracking with next-day delivery aim. It's similar to 1st class but with online tracking throughout the journey.

What if your 1st class parcel is late?

Steps to take 0 / 4 checked

Wait at least 5 working days from posting before reporting (Royal Mail's guideline)
Check with neighbours and safe places in case it was left somewhere
If tracked, check the status at royalmail.com/track
Submit a claim at royalmail.com if the item doesn't arrive
