Does Special Delivery require a signature?

Yes. Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed requires a signature on delivery. This is one of the key features that distinguishes it from standard postal services.

Signature required - someone at the delivery address must sign for the item
Full tracking included with online proof of delivery
Guaranteed delivery by 9am or 1pm the next working day
Compensation cover included up to £500 (or £2,500 with enhanced cover)

Quick answer

Yes, Special Delivery always requires a signature. The recipient (or someone at the address) must sign for the item. If nobody is home, Royal Mail will leave a "Something for you" card and the item can be collected from your local delivery office or redelivered.

How Special Delivery works

The delivery process 0 / 5 checked

Sender posts the item at a Post Office using Special Delivery service
Item is tracked throughout the journey with live status updates
Delivery is guaranteed by 9am or 1pm the next working day
Postman asks for a signature at the door (or uses electronic capture)
Proof of delivery is recorded and available online

What happens if you're not home?

"Something for you" card is left telling you where to collect or how to arrange redelivery
Collect from delivery office - bring the card and photo ID to your local Royal Mail office
Arrange redelivery online at royalmail.com/redelivery for a more convenient date

The postman will not leave a Special Delivery item with a neighbour or in a safe place unless you've specifically authorised this in advance.

Can you nominate a safe place?

Unlike standard parcels, Special Delivery items can't be left in a safe place by default. The whole point of the service is the signed proof of delivery.

You can sometimes authorise delivery to a neighbour through Royal Mail's redelivery options. The neighbour will need to sign instead.

If you know you'll be out, arrange redelivery to a day when someone will be home. You can do this online before the first attempt if you're tracking the item.
