Understanding GSM and Padding Thickness for Maximum Protection

GSM and padding thickness: the two numbers that determine how well your padded envelopes protect.

3 min readUpdated April 2025

What GSM means for padded envelopes

GSM = grams per square metre measuring the kraft paper outer weight
Higher GSM = stronger, more tear-resistant outer
Higher GSM = heavier affecting postage weight bands

Quick answer

Choose 80-100gsm kraft outer for standard items and 5-8mm padding for most products. Higher GSM (120gsm+) outer paper resists tearing on heavy items. Thicker padding (8-10mm+) suits fragile goods. Standard 80gsm with 5mm padding handles jewellery, accessories, and small electronics well. Over-specifying adds weight and cost without proportional protection gains.
