Understanding Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Why It Matters in Packaging
What is ESD and why does your packaging choice determine whether electronics survive shipping?
What is ESD?
Electrostatic discharge is the sudden flow of electricity between two objects at different electrical potentials. In packaging, this means static charge built up on packaging material suddenly discharging through a sensitive electronic component, potentially destroying it.
Quick answer
ESD is static electricity discharging through electronic components, destroying or degrading them. Walking on carpet generates 1,500-35,000 volts. Semiconductors are damaged by just 20-100 volts. You cannot feel static below 3,500 volts, so damage happens invisibly. Anti-static packaging prevents charge from building on packaging surfaces, eliminating the discharge risk. This is why specific ESD-safe materials (not standard bubble) are essential for electronics.
How ESD damages electronics
Component destroyed instantly. The most visible form of damage.
Component weakened but passes testing. Fails weeks or months later in the field.
Products reach customers before failing, causing warranty claims and recalls.

Prevention through packaging
Anti-static packaging dissipates charge safely (10^9-10^12 ohms surface resistance). Static shielding packaging creates a Faraday cage that blocks external fields. Conductive packaging provides the lowest resistance path for charge dissipation. Each type suits different sensitivity levels.

Electrostatic discharge: static electricity suddenly flowing through an object.
As low as 20 volts for semiconductors. Humans feel nothing below 3,500V.
Weakened components that pass testing but fail in the field later.
It dissipates charge safely, preventing buildup and discharge.
Standard bubble generates static. Anti-static bubble dissipates it.
